Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Welcome (master unknown).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (schooner, 60 tons, abandoned by her crew), laden with sugar, oil, onions and potatoes; taken on 22 September 1776 waiting to get into Chesapeake Bay by HMS Pearl (Thomas Wilkinson commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: within the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of George Cherry, agent for the officers and men of HMS Pearl v The schooner Welcome and her cargo, 28 November 1777 [14 months later; Wilkinson died in December 1776].
  • [CP 2]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master William Foster midshipman of HMS Pearl, 3 July 1778.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-3 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
