Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Warren formerly North Briton (master Hezekiah Perkins).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 50 tons, 5 men) bound from Charleston, South Carolina to Bordeaux, laden with rice, indigo; taken on 29 October 1777 in latitude 38°N, longitude 73°W by HMS Nautilus (John Collins commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-3:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master John Prime Iron Rochfort, lieutenant, 3 November 1777;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Collins v The sloop Warren and her cargo, 6 November 1777;
  • [CP 3]: deposition of Hezekiah Perkins of Nova Scotia and Connecticut, 15 November 1777.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-6:-

  • SP 1: ship's register, owners Joseph Russell, Samuel Broome & Co, Philip Moon and Archibald Blair, Dartmouth, Massachusetts, 16 August 1777;
  • SP 2: invoice of cargo of rice and indigo, undated;
  • SP 3: clearance, from Charleston, 23 September 1777;
  • SP 4: business letter from Bordeaux, Atkinson & Co, Charleston to John Lafit Cadet [Jean Lafitte, cadet], Bordeaux, 24 September 1777, enclosing SP 4A and SP 4B, invoice of cargo and bill of lading, 23 September 1777.
