Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Three Sisters (master James Corderay or Caudry).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 60 tons, 10 men) bound from Sinepuxent, Maryland to Curaçao, laden with tobacco, lumber; taken on 5 December 1779 off the Capes of Delaware in latitude 37°N by HMS Roebuck (Sir Andrew Snape Hamond commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master George Balmer, lieutenant, 15 December 1779
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Hamond v The brigantine Three Sisters and her cargo, 15 December 1779;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 15 December 1779;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of James Corderay, 16 December 1779.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 5 January 1780].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1:-

  • SP 1: clearance from the 5th District of Maryland for Curaçao, 19 November 1779.
