Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Rising States of Roanoake (master Samuel Mansfield).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 80 tons, 6 guns, 25 men) bound from Edenton, North Carolina to Nantes, laden with tobacco, and staves; taken on 18 July 1782 in latitude 45°N, longitude 4°10'W by the privateer General Conway (David Mauger commanding), and brought into Jersey.

Intended voyage: from the United States to France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (numbered 1-9) brought in by David Mauger, 24 July 1782;
  • [CP 2]: depositions of Samuel Mansfield, born in Connecticut, and Thomas Curtis, mate, commissioners' affidavit, taken at Jersey, 24 July 1782.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-9:-

  • SP 1: bill of health, Edenton, North Carolina, 13 June 1782;
  • SP 2: ship's register, owners Willis Langley, James Webb, Messrs Baker & Blow, and James Pasture the master, Edenton, 14 January 1782, amended to Samuel Mansfield master, 14 June 1782;
  • SP 3: clearance bond, with descriptions of Samuel Mansfield (aged 25, 5'11") [a Captain Samuel Mansfield was captured 3 time: see also HCA 32/446/27 (Jan 1781) and HCA 32/458/8 (December 1782)] and of Thomas Curtis mate, 13 June 1782 ;
  • SP 4: bill of lading, for tobacco shipped by Willis Langley and others, 14 June 1782;
  • SP 5-SP 6: two invoices of cargo;
  • SP 7: detailed list of sundries to be bought in France for Willis Langley, including tableware, cloth, shoes, red and white china, pins etc;
  • SP 8: detailed list of sundries to be bought in France for James Webb senior, including cloth, clothes, specatacles, spices, shoes, a house bell etc;
  • SP 9: detailed list of sundries to be bought in France for Webb Bryn & Co, including sky blue broadcloth and trimings for Henry Bond, sky blue and black cloth for Mrs Bateman, and cloth, a dressing glass, a Jappaned tea board, umbrella, etc for James Webb junior.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-5; Ship's papers: 6-14 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2026].
