Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Little Charles or Loyal Anne (master Jeremiah Dickinson).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop) bound from St Eustatius to Charleston South Carolina laden with salt, rum, medicine and European goods; taken on 17 January 1778 in latitude 32°41'N, longitude 78°46'W from London by HMS Galatea (Thomas Jordan commanding) and brought into New York.

Dickinson is described as master of Little Charles in some documents, and of Loyal Anne in others, all dated at St Eustatius in January 1778.

Court Papers:

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers [numbered 1-18 for the court, and others not numbered].
  • [CP 2]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Jordan v the sloop Little Charles and her cargo, 25 February 1778.

Ships Papers numbered SP 1-41 (South Carolina papers) including Dickinson's personal archive (pofo) mixed up:

  • SP 1: ship's register, owner Joseph Darrell, 19 Feb 1777.

  • SP 11: pass in French for the Dutch vessel Loyal Ann (master Richard Summersall), St Eustatius, 3 Feb 1777.

  • SP 14: owners' instructions for the Loyal Ann, bound for Charleston, from Penniston & Keele, St Eustatius, 2 Jan 1778.

  • SP 19-SP 20: Dutch bill of health and pass for the Loyal Ann (Summersall) 14 Feb 1777.

  • SP 22: receipt for cargo of beeswax, tallow etc, Pitt County, 7 July 1777.
  • SP 23-SP 30: various receipts.
  • SP 31: Dickinson's account current with Thomas Buckle, 31 Aug 1773.
  • SP 32: medicinal dosage of salts or bark.
  • SP 33: calculation of bills to be taken from the cargo.
  • SP 34: list of officers on board HMS Portland (Thomas Dumaresq) [1775-1779]. Written on paper torn from a RN muster book or similar, this ought to be a stray from elewhere. Unfortunately, a faint pencil inscription with some sums seems to say"Jeremiah Dickinson", placing it here.
  • SP 35: Dutch account of Thomas Halliburton, 5 Jan 1778.
  • SP 36: Dickinson's book of accounts, 28pp for the schooner Exchange, for voyages from Charleston to Jamaica, Grenada and Sunbury, Georgia, Aug-Dec 1770, and payments to crew for schooners Expedition and Fancy, Nov-Dec 1773.
  • SP 37: Dickinson''s logbook or journal for the schooner Fancy, for voyages from Charleston to St Thomas and St Eustatius, June 1775-Aug 1777, and reused by the prize master Benedict Byrn, who drafted 2 letters to his wife about his poor health (pp 69-70); also includes a drawing of a man (p 67); a faint pencil drawing showing the Chesapeake from Cape Henry to Rappahannock River, with a ship in sail; 30 verses of a song [part III of The Berkshire Lady's Garland], beginning"Early on one summer morning, while bright Phoebus was adorning" about a lady in a mask who challenges a young man to marry her or fight her; marked"William Gasking wrought this in St Eustatia 14 October 1776" (pp 73-76); Dickinson's lists of clothes to be washed, including the cabin curtains. This book orginally had a paper cover of yellow paper with a black, white and grey decoration, removed in 1927, and now perhaps HCA 65/54/10.
  • SP 37A-SP37B: two fragments of a torn up letter found inside SP 37.
  • SP 38: small notebook for the sloop Hawke, Sept 1776-Sept 1777, mentioning enslaved sailors; another washing list.
  • SP 39 small notebook for the sloop Little Charles, of sundries and sales.
  • SP 40: small notebook with a patterned red cover, for the sloop Little Charles: sailors' wages.
  • SP 41: logbook of the Little Charles, for 9-17 Jan 1778.
