Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Friendship (master Samuel Smallcorn).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brigantine, 100 tons, 9 men) bound from Portsmouth, New Hampshire to Grenada, laden with lumber, fish; taken on 6 July 1781 off Point Montauk, New York by HMS Adamant (Gideon Johnstone commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from the United States to the Caribbean Islands.

Court papers numbered CP 1-2:-

  • [CP 1]: libel in Advocate General at the relation of Johnstone v The brig Friendship and her cargo, 11 July 1781;
  • [CP 2]: deposition of Samuel Smallcorn, 16 July 1781.

[Papers previously wrongly identified as Court papers: 1-2 (large pencil numbers): sorted and renumbered in 2025].
