Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Eagle (master Joses Hill).

History: an American merchant ship (schooner, 87 tons, 14 men) bound from Baltimore, Maryland to Cadiz, laden with tobacco and staves; taken on 15 June 1782 off Cape Hatteras by the loyalist privateer Virginia (Stanton Hazard commanding), and brought into New York.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers brought in by the prize master Nugent Crofton, 22 June 1782;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Hazard v The schooner Eagle, 22 June 1782;
  • [CP 3]: monition, 22 June 1782;
  • [CP 4]: deposition of Daniel Coffin, 25 June 1782.

[Decision: condemned, if no response to the monition by 13 July 1782].

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-8 (Maryland papers):-

  • SP 1: bill of stores for Cadiz;
  • SP 2: bill of lading;
  • SP 3-SP 4: official ship's papers;
  • SP 5: list of payments to the crew to be made in Cadiz, total 274 guineas, 9 joes;
  • SP 6-SP 8: ship's business papers.
