High Court of Admiralty.
Captured ship: Commerce (master Francis Hodgson).
Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 70 tons, 7 men) bound from Egg Harbor, New Jersey to France, laden with tobacco and staves; taken on 17 January 1779 in latitude 47°N, longitude 14°W by the privateer Active (John Broom commanding), and brought into Poole.
Intended voyage: from the United States to France.
Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-
- [CP 1]: three depositions of Francis Hodgson, born in Hull but now of Philadelphia, Edward Reiley of Philadelphia, and William Lowell of Boston, taken at Poole, 23 January 1779;
- [CP 2]: commissioners' affidavit, 23 January 1779 ;
- [CP 3]: attestation as to papers (no papers) brought in by John Broom, 23 January 1779;
- [CP 4]: allegation, 19 February 1779.
