Captured ship: Commerce (master Francis Hodgson).
Capture history: an American merchant ship (sloop, 70 tons, 7 men) bound from Egg Harbor, New Jersey to France, laden with tobacco and staves; taken on 17 January 1779 in latitude 47°N, longitude 14°W by the privateer Active (John Broom commanding), and brought into Poole.
Intended voyage: from the United States to France.
