Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Chebeck of Les Sables d'Olonnes (master André Guiné).

Capture history: a French merchant ship (100-130 tons, 8 men and boys, and 1 passenger named as the Chevalier de Verneuil) bound from Charleston, South Carolina to Nantes, laden with rice and indigo; taken on 1 January 1778 in latitude 46°50'N by the privateer Revenge (Noah Gautier commanding), and brought into Jersey.

Intended voyage: from the United States to France.

Court papers numbered CP 1-7:-

  • [CP 1]: attestation as to papers (none found) by Noah Gautier, 13 January 1778;
  • [CP 2]: three depositions of Maurice Magneaux, Jean Mouralis and François Butry, and commissioners' affidavit, taken in Jersey, 13 January 1778;
  • [CP 3]: covering letter, transmitting CP 1-CP 3, 13 January 1778;
  • [CP 4]: further attestation as to papers (numbered 1-8) by the prize master Thomas Filleul (delivered to him by Guiné on their voyage from capture to Jersey,other papers having been thrown overboard before capture), 9 February 1778;
  • [CP 5]: deposition of André Guiné, and commissioners' affidavit, taken in Jersey, 9 February 1778;
  • [CP 6]: translations of ship's papers, London, 19 March 1778;
  • [CP 7]: allegation, 26 March 1778.

  • SP 1: muster roll;
  • SP 2: ship's pass;
  • SP 3-SP 4: clearances;
  • SP 5: certificate of ship's gauge, Sables d'Olonnes;
  • SP 6: pass from La Rochelle;
  • SP 7: cargo loaded at [Charleston];
  • SP 8: extract from the registry of the Admiralty of Les Sables d'Olonnes.
