Captured ship: Charlotte of Glasgow (master Andrew Watson).
Capture history: a Scottish merchant ship (brigantine) bound from Liverpool to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, laden with salt, loaf sugar, stoneware and bottled beer; taken at Cape May in the entrance to the Delaware Bay by two American armed galleys on 8 June 1778 [10 days before the British evacuation of Philadelphia] who stripped her of masts, rigging, sails and part of the cargo, retaken the same day in latitude 38°N, longitude 27°W by two British merchant ships without a commission (both carrying provisions for HM troops from Cork to Philadelphia), the Nancy (Stephen Deverex commanding) and Favourite (William Butterwick commanding), and brought into New York.
