Description

British New York Vice-Admiralty Court.

Captured ship: Charlotte of Glasgow (master Andrew Watson).

Capture history: a Scottish merchant ship (brigantine) bound from Liverpool to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, laden with salt, loaf sugar, stoneware and bottled beer; taken at Cape May in the entrance to the Delaware Bay by two American armed galleys on 8 June 1778 [10 days before the British evacuation of Philadelphia] who stripped her of masts, rigging, sails and part of the cargo, retaken the same day in latitude 38°N, longitude 27°W by two British merchant ships without a commission (both carrying provisions for HM troops from Cork to Philadelphia), the Nancy (Stephen Deverex commanding) and Favourite (William Butterwick commanding), and brought into New York.

Intended voyage: from England to British America.

  • [CP 1]: affidavit of papers (no papers) brought in by James Deverex [in the text, but signed Stephen Deverex], 8 July 1778;
  • [CP 2]: libel in Deverex v The brigantine Charlotte and her cargo, 8 July 1778;
  • [CP 3]: answer and claim of Andrew Miller, merchant of New York for himself and for John Alston, James Young, Alexander Grindley, John Alston junior and Michael Carmichael, merchants of Glasgow, Scotland, 22 July 1778.
