Description

High Court of Admiralty.

Captured ship: Ann (master James Darrell).

Capture history: an American merchant ship (brig, 90 tons, 11 men) bound from Nantes to Charleston, South Carolina, laden with salt, iron, nails and bale goods; taken on 9 July 1778 in latitude 46°30'N, longitude 4°30'W about 35 leagues from the mouth of the River Loire by the privateer Aeolus of Jersey (Philip Giffard commanding), and brought into Jersey.

Intended voyage: from France to the United States.

Court papers numbered CP 1-4:-

  • [CP 1]: three depositions of James Darrell and Gabriel Darrell of Charleston, and William Morel of Rhode Island, and commissioners affidavit, 18-21 July 1778;
  • [CP 2]: affidavit as to papers (numbered 1-11, by category) brought in by Giffard, 24 July 1778;
  • [CP 3]: allegation, 5 September 1778;
  • [CP 4]: translation from French of SP 5 and SP 10.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-11 (South Carolina papers; a very good example of ship's business papers, well-kept by James Darrell):-

  • SP 1: account current for the sale of rice, tobacco, indigo, payment of wages, freight etc, total £23,060 9s 11d, 30 June 1778;
  • SP 2: twenty-one invoices, in French and English, now numbered SP 2(1)-SP 2(21);
  • SP 3: sixteen accounts of sales of tobacco and indigo, consigned by various Charleston merchants, all dated Nantes, 30 June, and now numbered SP 3(1)-SP 3(16);
  • SP 4: seven sundry memoranda for the purchase of goods, now numbered SP 4(1)-SP 4(7);
  • SP 5; French ship's pass;
  • SP 6: six letters in French now numbered
    • SP 6(1) business letter to Messrs Desverney & Pincel Londouard at Charleston, from Jacques Le Cadre, Nantes, 13 June 1778;
    • SP 6(2) a letter to Emanuel Pincel at Charleston from his brother (in Dutch ?), 6 May 1778;
    • SP 6(3) a letter to Plombard at Charleston, from Legris, 22 June 1778;
    • SP 6(4) a letter to M Lestarjette, Carrier & Co, merchants at Charleston, from Peltier du Doyer, Nantes 30 June 1778, enclosing SP 6(5) a letter to Louis Lestarjette from [his wife?], Dunkirk, 10 June 1778;
    • SP 6(6), a letter to Carlee Braxton, Virginia, from Messrs Plomabard & Legris, Nantes, 9 June 1778, (in English).
  • SP 7: twenty-two bills of lading, now numbered SP 7(1)-SP 7(11), from Charleston to Nantes, and SP 7(12)-SP 7(22), from Nantes to Charleston;
  • SP 8-SP 9: South Carolina official ship's papers (cocket and register);
  • SP 10: French clearance.
