Administrative / biographical background

The memorial commemorates pensioners from the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, buried in the cemetery between 1855 and 1893. The Office of Works was responsible for the care and maintenance of Brompton Cemetery under the Brompton Cemetery Act 1852, but declined to take care of the memorial.
