Because of the 20 year interval since the previous enumeration the programme of enquiries for the 1951 census was the largest so far attempted. The 1951 Census of Jersey, Guernsey and the adjacent Islands was the first conducted by the Insular Authorities under the Islands' Laws and Ordinances of 1951.
