The Industrial Democracy Committee (IDC) was set up in 1975 by Peter Shore, Secretary of State for Trade under Harold Wilson, to consult regarding the development of Industrial Democracy in the United Kingdom. A major aspect of this concept was the extent to which the work force in an organisation should be represented on the company board.
This was a one-off inquiry about industrial democracy in a period of UK history subject to social unrest and much trade union activity and representation. There was much national interest in topics such as worker representation on company boards and similar measures. Also comparison with the actions taken or likely to be taken by other countries in this respect, notably EEC countries.
