Miscellaneous records of the Kensington Canal Company
The Kensington Canal was created by the Kensington Canal (Counter's Creek) Act 1824 (5 Geo IV, cap.lxv) which authorised the construction of a canal from the River Thames at Counter's Creek, Chelsea to Warwick Road.
The canal was opened on 12th August 1828 and was 1.75 miles long with a lock at the tidal entrance.
The West London Railway Company took over the canal in 1846. Under the powers of the West London Extension Railway Act 1859 the West London Railway was transfered to the London and North Western Railway and the canal to the West London Extension Railway.
In 1863 the section of the canal between Warwick Road and King's Road was closed, filled in and a railway laid on its site.
The remaining part of the canal continued in use until 1959 when the British Transport Commission obtained powers to close the section from King's Road to the tidal dock at the Thames.
