By Act of 10 & 11 William III, cap.20 (1699), powers were granted to William Lord Paget Baron of Beaudesert, Lord of Manor of Burton upon Trent, and to his heirs and assigns being lord or lords of said Manor for time being and to such person or persons as he or they should nominate and appoint, called in said Act "Undertaker or Undertakers" to make River Trent navigable and to maintain such navigation.
By further Act of 24th June 1783 "Company of Proprietors of River Trent Navigation" was incorporated.
On 12th November 1883 certain persons registered themselves a Company under companies Acts 1862 & 1883, by name, "Trent Navigation and Carrying Company Ltd" for purpose of acquiring property &c. of Trent Navigation Company.
By Trent Navigation Act of 19th May 1884, both old and new companies aforementioned were dissolved and united as "Trent Navigation Company".
Under "Trent (Burton upon Trent and Humber) Navigation Act 1887" latter Company was dissolved and "Trent (Burton upon Trent and Humber) Navigation Company" incorporated. Board of Directors of new company held their first meeting on 16th August 1887.
Under Trent Navigation Act 27th June 1892, name of Company was changed to "Trent Navigation Company".
Company passed to British Transport Commission by virtue of Transport Act 1947.
