Incorporated 11th April 1826 under name of "Company of Proprietors of Macclesfield Canal". Company was leased in perpetuity to Sheffield, Ashton under Lyne and Manchester Railway Company under act of 27th July 1846, and under act of 2nd August 1883 (Section 48) Company was dissolved and vested in Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company whose name was changed in 1897 to Great Central Railway Company which became amalgamated with companies forming London and North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923.
