First Act obtained 30th April 1793 (33 Geo III, cap.98) forming "Company of Proprietors of Leicester and Northamptonshire Union Canal". Canal is referred to in Bradshaw's "Canals and Navigable Rivers of England and Wales" as "Old Union Canal alias Leicester and Northamptonshire Union Canal". In 1894 it was purchased together with Grand Union Canal by Grand Junction Canal.
