By act of 30th April 1777 (17 Geo III, cap.lxix), 74 persons including Duke of Rutland were incorporated by name "Company of Proprietors of Erewash Canal in Counties of Derby and Nottingham".
By virtue of Grand Union Canal (Leicester Canals Purchase &c.) Act 31st July 1931, Erewash Canal was purchased by and vested in Grand Union Canal Company which latter Company was vested in British Transport Commission under Transport Act 1947.
