Description

Folios 240-241: Charles Dudley Pater, HMS Shannon, Yarmouth Roads. Covering letter for the enclosed letter from James Ham.n[?] Clewlow, to him accounting for his not having joined this ship before; He also states that the Surgeon has reported to him the injury the Purser has received by a fall, and although much recovered there exists the necessity of his attendance from the above cause still. He also adds that the Purser is an Old Servant of the Navy, and has attended his duty much to his satisfaction until this accident.

Folios 242-243: enclosure with folios 240-241. Letter dated 9 October 1801 by James Hamilton Clewlow, HMS Shannon, Yarmouth Roads, to Charles Dudley Pater, HMS Shannon. States on his arrival at Sheerness from Chatham late in the evening of the 28 August 1801 where he had received the necessary money etc, he found HMS Shannon had sailed from the Nore, he was therefore determined to proceed immediately to Yarmouth in order to take the first opportunity of a passage to join the ship and to report himself to the Commander in Chief at that Port, he unfortunately received a fall which cut his left arm, and bruised his left side, that he has not been able scarcely to move until Tuesday last.
