Folios 240-241: Robert Dudley Oliver, HMS Melpomene, Spithead. Advises that the Shannon has been completely destroyed by fire and refers to the boats of the sloop HMS Merlin, which ship had been sent to look around Cape Barfleur because the Shannon had gone missing following a gale. He had seen the remains of the Shannon the previous morning, still burning.
