Description

Folios 358-359: Donald McLeod, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Replying to Admiralty query of 6 August, says John Keller was impressed by Lt Evans on 29 August1810, as an able seaman aged 25, 5ft 5ins. He said he was born at Norfolk (USA) and was mate of the Hope of York. He had no protection and was taken onshore at 9pm. Also, 1. James Ferris was impressed by Lt Evans on 25 July, an ordinary aged 23, said he was born in Charleston. He sailed in the Sarah, owners Messrs Birch & Ward, to Jamaica and back, and the indenture he produced did not seem to refer to him, nor did he have an American protection. 2. Peter Burgess entered with Lt Evans on 30 July as a boy volunteer, aged 13, saying he could get no work elsewhere. 3. William Harrington entered with Lt Evans on 26 June as a boy volunteer, aged 18, and denied being an apprentice. Folio 360: Enc with fos 358-359: From Messrs Holt & Edge of Manchester saying Harrington is their apprentice, now aboard the Salvador del Mundo, and asking for his discharge.

Folio 361: enclosure with folios 358-359. From Peter Burgess's parents, John and Martha Burgess, saying he was enticed and impressed into the Princess, and confirming his baptism for March 1798 at the Collegiate Church of Christ, Mancester.

Folio 362: enclosure with folios 358-359. Certificate of American citizenship for John Keller, from John Oakley, Collector at Georgetown, date 15 October 1803, and describing Keller as aged 18, 5ft 3 1/2 ins, born at Norfolk.

Folio 363: enclosure with folios 358-359. Indenture certificate [in v poor condition] for James Ferris of Charleston, apprenticed as mate to Captain James Missroon[?] for two years from 7 March 1810.
