Description

Folios 185-186: Donald M'Leod, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Advises that Anthony Clayton, born in Staffordshire, was impressed by Lieutenant Potter as an Ordinary Seaman. He was detained at the Rendezvous having been claimed by a Sergeant who was quartered at Anthony Clayton's sister's house as a recruit, which on investigation proved false. The certificate of his having procured a substitute for the Militia was not produced until he received this from the Admiralty. Advises that Matthew Speeding, born in Harrington, was impressed by Lieutenant Evans. He claimed to be Mate of the Lord Collingwood but had not produced any bond to act as such and he never mentioned he had been previously discharged. Advises that Nicholas Armour, born in Ireland, was impressed by Lieutenant Evans. He claimed to be a Ship keeper taking care of a vessel owned by Mr. Marshall, proprietor of Flats.

Folios 187-188: enclosed with folios 185-186. Letter dated 22 October 1810 by John Topham, Liverpool to the Admiralty. Encloses an affidavit and certificate with respect to Anthony Clayton who was impressed at Liverpool and is on board HMS Princess. Asks for him to be discharged.

Folios 189-190: enclosed with folios 185-186. Petition by Elizabeth Speeding, mother of Matthew Speeding to the Admiralty. Advises that Matthew Speeding was wounded on board the Jane & Sarah by HMS Jason firing into her on 22 JUNE 1809 and he was sent on board the Jason and then Haslar Hospital to be cured. Advises he was cured of the leg wound but not of rheumatism and was finally discharged from HM service as shown in an enclosed certificate. Advises that Mr. McDowall, who owns a vessel which Matthew Speeding's brother is Master, sent for him to procure him a birth, and he was appointed First Mate of the Lord Collingwood bound to the coast of Africa and was then appointed Mate of the vessel. Advises he procured an affidavit sworn before the Mayor and signed by him but Matthew Speeding and the vessel's owner neglected to sign the bond. Asks for him to be discharged and a response to be sent to Robert Foster, 3, Litherlands Alley, Liverpool.

Folios 191-192: enclosed with folios 185-186. Letter dated 23 October 1810 by George Ripley, Duke Street, Liverpool. Encloses an affidavit with the purpose of seeking the discharge of Nicholas Armour who is currently on board HMS Princess.
