Description

Folios 435-436: Joshua Sydney Horton, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to the letter of 29 March. Neil Norman, a native of Shetland, was pressed by Lieutenant Rees on 16 February as an Able Seaman. He had no Protection and nobody has claimed him. William Lawrenson, born in Prescott, entered with Lieutenant Rees as a Landsman Volunteer on 22 March. He declared he was not an apprentice. James Seward, an apprentice who was ordered to be discharged on repayment of the expenses as per the letter of 27 March, was sent to Plymouth for the disposal of Admiral Young. Encloses an indenture [not present] produced by a man calling himself David Myles, who was pressed by Lieutenant Evans as an Ordinary Seaman. He was born in St Johns, New Brunswick, and acknowledged that he had sailed coastways for 2 years and had been on a voyage up the straits prior to being bound. A Protection was produced to claim him as a native of America, which has been given to Mr Maury, the Consul, at his request. The man has been sent on board HMS Princess pending a decision. He returns the enclosures. Also sends the weekly returns of men raised at Liverpool [not present].

Folios 437-438: enclosure with folio 435. Letter dated 28 March 1809 from Edward Lawrenson, Prescott, c/o Bond and Strut, Hillack Street, Prescott, Lancashire, to The Admiralty. His son was pressed on 26 March when in Liverpool on family business. He is a minor, and in no way suited to a life at sea. Requests an order for his discharge on payment of any charge, but he is only a collier.
