Folios 23-24: Peter Halkett, HMS Ganges, Spithead. He announces his arrival and encloses orders received from Admiral Berkely and Captain Linzee. He adds that nothing of note has occurred since he parted from HMS Triumph, HMS Zealous and HMS Dotterell on 17th June 1809. He reports that on 24 June 1809 he communicated with HMS Sally and the Transport ships that had left Lisbon in convoy with HMS Swallow on 9 June 1809. At around 21 June 1809 they had spotted two lines of battle ships steering roughly North East. From their description they were certainly English ships. On 28 June 1809 he exchanged signals with HMS Gannet which was coming from Malta and Cadiz, bound for England.
Folio 25: enclosure with folios 23-24. An order from the Hon. George Berkely, Vice Admiral of the Red and Commander in Chief of ships and vessels on the coast of Spain and Portugal, dated 6 June 1809 and addressed to Captain Peter Halkett of HMS Ganges. He has received a report that some French ships of the line have escaped from The Saintes [Santo Domingo and nearby islands?]. He is instructed to follow the orders of Captain Linzee of HMS Triumph and cruize with him for 10 days with the object of intercepting the French ships and thereafter to make his way to Spithead.
Folio 26: Peter Halkett 23-24. An order from Captain Linzee of HMS Triumph dated 17 June 1809 to Captain Peter Halkett. Under orders from Vice Admiral George Berkely, Captain Halkett is instructed to head for England but only after he has spent 10 days searching for the French ships Polonaise and Comageux which are said to be heading for France. The left The Saintes [Santo Domingo and nearby islands?] on 14 April 1809 and so if he is not successful in locating them, then he is instructed to head for Spithead where he must give the letter he encloses (not enclosed) to the Secretary of the Admiralty.
