Folios 13-14: Peter Halkett, HMS Ganges, the Tagus. Since his last letter of 3 January 1809, he is able to report that HMS Nautilus is refitted and ready to sail and the Russian ships are also ready to be re victualled. In his judgement it will require very hard hands to navigate them. They are heavily built and awkwardly rigged. He therefore, asks once more for assistance. If the enemy advances towards them, they are already overstretched with so many activities in hand in addition to demands to escort convoys. It is intended to send the women, children and sick soldiers home and the baggage from Sir John Moore's army has to be send to Vigo. This fills 15 vessels and comprises about 2500 tons. He very much wants to clear the river of such transports that are not immediately required not least because since 23rd of last month there have only been about three hours during which transports could leave the river. On 27th the transports bound for Quiberon with a part of the French army put into nearby St Julians because of the westerly wind. He would be grateful to know that the actions he has taken are approved of by the Admiralty.
