Folios 254-255: J A Gordon, HMS Active, Sheerness. He asks that Mr Charles Friend, presently the Mate on his ship be promoted to Lieutenant. He reminds the Admiralty that after the action of 13 March, the late Sir Charles Cotton had said it was the Admiralty's intention to promote a Midshipman from each ship to Lieutenant. As this did not happen on his ship he asks that instead Mr Friend be promoted.
Folios 256: Enclosure to folios 254-255: A brief note from within the Admiralty ordering Mr Charles Friend of HMS Active's promotion to Lieutenant.
Folio 257: Enclosure to folios 254-255: A document from the Navy Office dated 10 June 1812, Certifying that Mr Charles Friend served aboard HMS Camel, HMS Grampus and HMS Active on the dates given making in total of over 6 years' service in the Navy.
Folio 258: Enclosure to folios 254-255: A note signed by Captains Milford, Vincent and Graham respectively the Captains of HMS Espoir, Trident and Alcemene (in the text Alemene) attesting to Mr Charles Friend's periods of service under their command amounting in total to over 6 years. He is also commended for his diligence and his practical skills are listed.
