Description

Folios 159-160: Edward Grey, Regulating Officer, Hull [Rendezvous]. Reply to letter dated 28 December 1808 with the enclosed Petition of George Brigham. Who has been impressed at Hull. On 19 December 1808 George Brigham an Able Seaman was impressed by Lieutenant Laurence Dundas Bruce (by information received for which he had paid three pounds) he was taken to his Mothers House (one of the most notorious Bawdy Houses in Hull). When taken he had the venereal disease and under the care of a very unskilful Surgeon. Since at the Rendezvous he has been under the care of John Kirkman, Surgeon and Agent for Sick and Hurt, who informs him that the man is really quite well. He encloses a copy of Mr Kirkman's report.

Folios 161-162: enclosures with folios 159-160. Petition dated 26 December 1808 by George Brigham, Hull, to the Admiralty. Requests the discharge of George Brigham due to his health.

Folio 163: enclosure with folios 159-160. Letter dated 31 December 1808 by John Kirkman, [Surgeon], [Hull] to Edward Grey. I have examined George Brigham, the only complaint which he has and which he confesses is a venereal complaint;- for the cure of which he had put himself under the care of an ignorant enterprise; who imprudently has given him too much mercury. From the care that has been taken of him since he is considerably better an the only symptom that remains is a slight burning which will be cured in a few days. He is in every respect a fit man for His Majesty's Service.
