Description

Folios 128-129: John Gore, HMS Triton, Plymouth Sound. Reports arrival in HMS Triton in this Port and that the combined Fleets of France and Spain sailed from Cadiz on Sunday the 21 July 1799 consisting of at least 40 Sail of the Line, several smaller Ships amounting to 56 Sail, they had the Wind at SSW and stretched a long shore to the Westward. For information he refers to the copies of Orders and Letters enclosed as explanatory of his conduct until his arrival in Gibraltar on Saturday 20 July 1799 where he found the Right Honourable the Earl St Vincent [Sir John Jervis (Viscount St Vincent)] who after perusing his Orders and Letters was pleased to say"that my sentiments on the subject corresponded exactly with his own, & as it was of the utmost consequence that I should be off Cadiz to watch the enemy's motives at that critical juncture (a strong levanter having just set in) he would not detain me by writing an order, but leave me to follow the dictates of my own ideas. [Total of four sides with more details and details of the enclosures].

Folio 130: enclosure with folios 128-129. List of Five Liverpool Ships bound to Africa spoke with by HMS Triton 30 July 1799. The Lottery - Master Roger Leatham, Mary - Master Thomas Carmell, Louisa - Master William Brown, Diana - Master John Ainsworth & Iris - Master George cannon. Left Liverpool 17 July 1799. On 25 July 1799 captured a French Ship from the Isle of France to Bordeaux laden with Coffee, Cotton 7 Spices. On the 28 July 1799 Captured a Spanish Bark from St Andero bound to the River Plata.

Folio 131: enclosure with folios 128-129. John Gore, HMS Triton, off Carthagena [Cartagena?]. Copy No 4 (Dated 3 August 1799). Copy of a Letter to Lord Keith [Sir George Keith Elphinstone (1st Viscount Keith)]. Dated 13 July 1799. Upon the French & Spanish fleets having sailed from Carthagena

Folio 132: enclosure with folios 128-129. John Gore, HMS Triton, at Sea. Copy No 5 (Dated 3 August 1799). Copy of a Letter to Earl St Vincent [Sir John Jervis (Viscount St Vincent)]. Dated 22 July 1799. That the Combined Fleets had sailed from Cadiz.

Folio 133: enclosure with folios 128-129. Lord Keith [Sir George Keith Elphinstone (1st Viscount Keith)], HMS Queen Charlotte, Port Mahon. Copy No 3 (Dated 3 August 1799). To John Gore, HMS Triton. Dated 8 July 1799. Lord Keiths Answer.

Folio 135: enclosure with folios 128-129. Lord Keith [Sir George Keith Elphinstone (1st Viscount Keith)], HMS Queen Charlotte, off Minorca. Copy No 1 (Dated 3 August 1799). To John Gore, HMS Triton. Dated 7 July 1799. Lord Keiths Order to proceed with HMS Ethalion and HMS Emerald off Carthagena [Cartagena?].
