Description

Folios 602-603: John Thomas Duckworth, HMS Leviathan, Ushant bearing ENE 4 leagues. As ordered by Admiral Lord Bridport, he has been watching the enemy in Brest during a period of rough weather. Yesterday he sent Sir Charles Hamilton in HMS Melpomene with Captain Philip Charles Calderwood Henderson Durham in HMS Anson and ordered them to get as close to the roads as possible, while his ship and HMS Pompee covered them from further out, just inside Berthaume Castle. The captains report that they saw three divisions of ships, consisting of 18 or 20 ships of the line and 10 or 11 frigates and corvettes. Of these there were 14 vessels with sail bent on. Both Berthaume and Carteret Bays were free of vessels. HMS Pique is getting short of water and has a sprung yard, so he has ordered Captain David Milne to return to Plymouth and await further orders, taking with him a Prussian vessel loaded with masts which had cleared for Ferrol but was going into Brest and another vessel with a cargo of hemp. Captain Durham has sent in a ship under Danish colours from Marseilles, supposedly bound for Hamburg, which had been carried into Gibraltar by an English privateer, been cleared, and then was taken again by a French privateer who manned it with some of his own crew. PS The hemp vessel had cleared for Lisbon, but said he was going into Brest for want of water.
