Description

Folios 494-495: Man Dobson, Bristol Regulating Officer. Encloses Lieutenant Rowe’s report into Joseph Guppy, Shipwright of the Ann.

Folios 496-497: enclosed in folios 494-495. S. B. Simmons, 1 Montague Street, Bristol, 6 July 1813. Writing for Joseph Guppy, Shipwright, the ship Ann, Carpenter impressed last Saturday in Kingroad on arriving from Black River [Jamaica?]. Never in the Ann before. Has a wife who’s dangerously ill and two children. His anxious aged mother prompts this letter. Encloses a certificate from a respectable Bristol practitioner.

Folio 498: enclosed in folios 496-497. William Mortimer, Surgeon, Bridge Street. Certify that Mrs Guppy is in a precarious state of existence, laboring under express inflammation. She might die if she knew her husband’s situation.

Folio 499: enclosed in folios 494-495. Lieutenant Joshua Rowe, HMS Enchantress, Kingroad, 9 July 1813. He impressed Joseph Guppy 1st July protected as Carpenter out and home when impressed off the Ann, when anchored in safety in Kingroad. The Captain left her in charge of the harbour Pilot while he’d gone to Bristol. Says it’s been customary to carry a Carpenter on the books of one of the shipwright’s yards the moment the ship arrives at the quay where they find asylum from the impress until the vessel is outbound. Impressed Guppy age 28 whose made upwards of four voyages to the West Indies.
