Description

Folios 267-268: Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Response to a request to state the case of four men who were imprest. John Gregson, aged 26, was imprest on 14 January 1810 by Lieutenant James Rees. He obtained a Rigger Protection under false pretences in September 1809 and the surgeon has found he is fit for service. Acknowledges Richard Hughes should not be discharged and on 20 January 1810 he was sent on board HMS Princess. Robert Williams, aged 30, was imprest by Lieutenant Evans on 16 January 1810. He arrived in the Peggy from Belfast and information has been received that he is regularly going back and forward. Hugh Hughes, aged 18, was imprest on 27 December 1809 by Lieutenant James Rees. He stated he was an Apprentice but could produce no Indenture as proof. Tyler Dibble, aged 26 and born in New Brunswick, was imprest on shore 16 minutes after 8 o'clock by Lieutenant James Rees. Also reports that Lieutenant Evans had informed him that Robert Williams tried to escape from the Press Room attacking the guard, but was prevented from escaping by the return of the Gang.

Folios 269-270: enclosure with folios 267-268. Margaret Gregson, Mr Mercers, 22 Chapel Street, Liverpool to the Admiralty, 25 January 1810. Petition for the discharge of her husband, John Gregson, who was imprest 13 January 1810 on shore. States he is a Rigger with a Protection certificate and a regular Sea Fencible. She has three small children, is herself confined due to sickness and a dependent 80 year old mother.

Folios 271-272: enclosure with folios 267-268. Petition by John Gregson, Liverpool, 18 January 1810 for his discharge stating he has a wife and three small children and a seventy year old mother dependent on him.

Folio 273: enclosure with folios 267-268. Richard Hughes, HMS Princess, Liverpool to the Admiralty, 19 January 1810. Petition for his discharge stating he can offer one Landeman in his place. States he is a native of Charlestown and was imprest on 7 December 1809. He does not have a Protection Certificate as he was too young when he left.

Folios 275-276: enclosure with folios 267-268. William Molyneux, Liverpool, 20 January 1810. Petition for the discharge of Robert Williams, Sailmaker. Two other Master Sailmakers put his case to Benjamin Carter, Regulating Captain but he said they need to apply direct to the Admiralty for his discharge.

Folios 277-278: enclosure with folios 267-268. Affidavit by Henry Bagshaw, Sailmaker, Liverpool signed before John Clarke, Mayor on Liverpool on 17 January 1810. States that he has know Robert Williams, who was imprest and is now on board HMS Princess form the age of eleven to the present time. He has a wife and a young child, that he served an Apprenticeship with him as a sailmaker and that he has never been at sea.

Folios 279-280: enclosure with folios 267-268. Jonathan Darbyshire, Greenfield, Hollywell, Flintshire to the Admiralty, 18 January 1810. Request for discharge of Hugh Hughes, who was imprest and is on board HMS Princess. States he is his apprentice and encloses an affidavit to this effect.

Folio 281: enclosure with folios 267-268 and attached to folios 279-280. Affidavit by Jonathan Darbyshire, sworn at Holywell, Flint in front of D Pennant, Justice of the Peace, 13 January 1810. States that Hugh Hughes is his Apprentice and he signed for three years from 5 November 1808.

Folios 282-283: enclosure with folios 267-268. William Buck Criggs and Co, Liverpool to the Admiralty, 20 January 1810. Petition for the discharge of Tyler Dibble, Chief Mate of the Brig Only You, who arrived from St John, New Brunswick and was imprest on 18 January 1810. Outlines the circumstances of his being imprest.

Folios 284-285: enclosure with folios 267-268 and attached to folios 282-283. Affidavit sworn by Samuel Shadwell and Peter Cattrall, Liverpool before Thomas Golightly, 19 January 1810. Outlines the case of Tyler Dibble, who was imprest and alleges that he was taken by the Press Gang at 7.30pm and not after 8 o'clock, the time at which it was legal for him to be taken.
