Folios 464-465: Alexander Inglis Cochrane, HMS Northumberland, Bear Haven, Bantry Bay. Reports that there is a stream large enough to provide water for a fleet of men of war, and in order to render it usable, he has had it dammed and a reservoir built to the east of where Captain Jervis is fitting, with wooden pipes down to the beach and a wharf to protect the channel. Boats can use it from half tide, and even at low tide casks can be filled ready to be floated off when the tide comes in. Encloses a drawing of this watering place and a receipt from Daniel Harrington, the owner of the farm, for the work of constructing it. Mr Harrington is offering to maintain the watering place for a fee of £10 a year. Unless the works are protected, he thinks the local inhabitants will pull them to pieces when there are no ships there. The wind has changed during the night, so he has just given the signal to weigh anchor.
Folio 466: enclosed with folios 464-465. Letter dated 1 December 1803 by Daniel Harrington, Bear Haven, Bantry Bay. Offers to maintain the dam, reservoir and channels to the beach for the sum of £10 a year, and to look after any articles which the Navy ships leave behind.
Folio 467: enclosed with folios 464-465. Daniel Harrington, Bear Haven, Bantry Bay. Receipt dated 3 December 1803, for the sum of £10 received from Captain Alexander Cochrane for the work done in constructing a reservoir and watering place for ships and an additional £2 for the damage to his land by the canal which fills the reservoir. Agrees to lease the site to the Navy for 18 years, as this is the term of his remaining lease from Jeremiah Sullivan for his farm.
Folio 468: enclosed with folios 464-465. Duplicate of folio 466.
Folio 469: enclosed with folios 464-465. Hand-drawn sketch of the watering place constructed at Bear Haven, Bantry Bay, by diverting some of the water from a river into a canal feeding a reservoir on the beach.
