Description

Folios 374-375: Samuel Butcher, HMS Antelope, Portsmouth Harbour. He encloses two bills for the wages of two men, George Cox and John Martin who were impressed onto HMS Antelope at sea out of the Harriett Transport Vessel at the request of her master Mr Samuel Moore. They were previously deserters from the Antelope though Mr Moore gave him a letter addressed to him by a Mr Callaway the town clerk of Portsmouth asking for the two men to be paid despite the fact he must have known they were deserters.

Folio 375: enclosure with folios 374-375. Letter dated 1 September 1814 from naval agent Robert Brown, about the non payment of wages to two seamen from his ship.

Folio 376: enclosure with folios 374-375. A further letter from a naval agent Robert Brown dated 1 September 1814 about the non payment of wages owed to two seamen John Martin and George Cox.

Folios 377-378: enclosure with folios 374-375. Letter dated 9 December 1814 by Samuel Bligh, Portsmouth. He writes that the two seamen George Cox and John Martin who served under Captain Moore wish to be paid their wages for their service on the Harriet. He writes that Bills of Exchange were arranged to cover the amounts due to them and he also gives an account of the circumstances surrounding their detention on board his ship HMS Antelope. Accordingly he states, there is a legal obligation to pay the men.

Folio 379. enclosure with folios 374-375. Letter from Robert Brown, a naval agent to Captain Moore dated 10 December 1814. He ask that attention be given to letters awaiting him aboard HMS Antelope and asks for clarification of the situation surrounding the Bills of Exchange.
