Description

Folios 58-60: Richard Runwa Bowyer, Regulating Captain, Lynn. Acknowledges receipt of the letter containing one from Matthew Pearson, which he is returning. Doctor Richard Redfearn's letter proves that Pearson is lying. He also encloses a copy of his letter to the Admiralty of July 28, 1806, about the character of Pearson and his collusion with Thomas Nichols. He went to make enquiries yesterday about how many children Pearson has. He has only one son, who is apprenticed to a Joiner in the town. He encloses a list of the fishermen licensed by the Corporation of Lynn, all of whom sail their own boats even though many of them are larger than Pearson's boat. Only two of these boats have apprentices. He is quite certain that Pearson could manage his boat just with one boy. He repeats his belief that Pearson and Nichols have been colluding together, and thinks the Mayor would have intervened if he did not believe the same.

Folio 59A: enclosed with folios 58-60. Letter dated 3 August 1806 by Doctor Richard Redfearn, Lynn, to the Admiralty. Declares that what Matthew Pearson has said in his letter to the Admiralty about the impressment of Thomas Nichols is false. There was no such communication between Captain Richard Bowyer and himself.

Folio 60: enclosed with folios 58-60. List dated 4 August 1806 by Captain Richard Bowyer, Kings Lynn of the 20 licensed fishermen in Kings Lynn, with a note of how many boats they have and whether they have apprentices.

Folio 61: enclosed with folios 58-60. Copy of folio 54, but dated 28 July 1806, rather than July 29.

Folios 62-63: enclosed with folios 58-60. Letter dated 31 July 1806 by Matthew Pearson, Lynn, to the Admiralty. Is distressed to receive the Admiralty's letter, believes they have not examined the register as his boat was licensed on 19 February 1806, and he encloses a copy of the registration. He does not know what Captain Bowyer has said about Thomas Nichols, but finds it strange that the lawful protection given to the vessel should be revoked and his family thrown into poverty solely on Captain Bowyer's report. His license and protection have been made void and the laws of the country broken. Reports that on 29 July Captain Bowyer and Dr Richard Redfearn came to see his cutter, and the captain was overheard to say that if he had seen it sooner he would never have impressed the Master. He has been to see the Collector of Customs who told him that if a copy of the register was sent to the Admiralty they would discharge Nichols. He is confident the Admiralty will now release him and uphold the laws of the land for a man who served his country until his wounds and poor health obliged him to retire.

Folios 63-64 and 66-67: enclosed with folios 58-60. Copy of the Admiralty registration issued by Captain Thomas Baines on 19 February 1800, for the Success cutter of Lynn Regis, John Pearson, Master, and Matthew Pearson, Owner, as a fishing vessel between Leith and London. 24 February 1800. R Teary, Controller, and Thomas Lane, Collector, Custom House, Lynn. A certificate that the owner of the cutter has given a bond that the vessel will not be employed in smuggling.

Folio 64: enclosed with folios 58-60. Certificate dated 31 July 1806 by Captain Thomas Baines, Lynn. Certificate that in February of 1806 Thomas Nichols sailed with him on the Experiment to Greenland.

Folio 65: enclosed with folios 58-60. Letter dated 1 August 1806 by R Teary, Controller, and Thomas Lane, Collector, Custom House, Lynn. Certificate that the Success cutter was registered at Lynn Regis on 10 March 1800, and that Thomas Nichols was appointed Master on 18 July 1806.
