An amalgamation of Lynn & Sutton, and Spalding & Bourne railway companies under Lynn & Sutton; Spalding & Bourne, and Norwich & Spalding railway companies' Act of 23rd July 1866. By Midland & Eastern and Norwich & Spalding Railways Act 12th August 1867, agreements were made for Great Northern and Midland railway companies to work railway jointly.

Under Eastern & Midlands Railway (Amalgamation) Act 18th August 1882, Lynn & Fakenham and the Yarmouth & North Norfolk (Light) Railways were dissolved as from 31st December 1882 and were united and incorporated into one Company called Eastern & Midlands Railway Company. By Section 17 of that Act, Midland & Eastern, and Peterborough, Wisbeach & Sutton railway companies were also (on 1st January or 1st July next following date at which continuous lines of railway between Fakenham on one hand and Yarmouth and Norwich on other hand had been completed and opened for public traffic) dissolved, and united and incorporated into Eastern & Midlands Railway Company. This amalgamation took effect as from 1st July 1883.

By virtue of Section 36 &c. of Midland Railway Act 24th June 1889 certain portions of Eastern & Midlands Railway were transferred to and vested in Midland Railway Company and Great Northern Railway Company jointly. Under Midland and Great Northern railway companies (Eastern & Midlands Railway) Act 9th June 1893, Midland and Great Northern Railways Joint Committee was incorporated as body corporate and Eastern & Midlands Railway Company was transferred to and vested in this Joint Committee as from 1st July 1893; Eastern & Midlands Railway Company was to be wound up and dissolved.

Midland Railway Company was amalgamated into London Midland & Scottish Railway Company under North Western, Midland and West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922, and Great Northern Railway Company was amalgamated into London & North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under North Eastern, Eastern & East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December, 1922. Midland and Great Northern Railways Joint Committee retained its name and was transferred to and vested in British Transport Commission as from 1st January 1948 under Transport Act 1947.
