The Dearness Valley Railway Company was incorporated under an act of 30th July 1855 (18 & 19 Vic, cap.180). A clause in the act provided for line working by North Eastern Railway Company.

Undertaking was sold to North Eastern Railway Company under North-Eastern Railway Company (Lanchester Valley Branch) Act 13th July 1857.
