Description

Prisoner name: James Pike.

Prisoner age: 30.

Prisoner occupation: Fishmonger at Camberwell, Surrey.

Court and date of trial: Kent Winter Assizes, Maidstone, 13 December 1830.

Crime: Stealing in a dwelling house. The property of [Mr Phelps].

Initial sentence: Death recorded and commuted to transportation for life.

Annotated: Nil.

Petitioner(s): John Tyler and Company, fish factors of Cross Lane, City of London, former employer and undersigned by 38 inhabitants of Billingsgate and Camberwell, London; James Pike, the convict.

Grounds for clemency: Previous good character; he has a wife and two children dependent upon his labour for support; the company's dealings with him in his new business have been conducted with regularity and entire satisfaction; he offers to assist in the prosecution of his accomplices.

Other papers: Letter from Richard Bower, Mayor of Weymouth to the Home Department enclosing a letter from the convict offering to assist the authorities. Letter from Timothy Maber of Turnwood, near Blandford, Dorset, one of the victims corroborating details of the crimes.

Additional Information: The convict is apparently a member of a gang that broke into 13 houses in the Weymouth and Dorchester, Dorset areas. His letter to the Mayor of Weymouth gives much detail of the crimes.
