Administrative / biographical background

In July 1961 negotiations began between Sir Winston Churchill, the Chartwell Trustees, the Cabinet Office and the PRO regarding the disposition and cataloguing of the records and papers accumulated by Churchill in the course of his personal and public lives.

Although some cataloguing had taken place previously, over the years 1961-1964 the entire corpus was recatalogued by PRO staff. There were three collections: all those papers up to 27 July 1945 which were made over by Sir Winston to the Chartwell Trust, which were catalogued as CHARTWELL; Sir Winston's papers after 27 July 1945, catalogued as CHURCHILL; and the papers of the Prime Minister's private office 1940-1945 which had been retained in official custody, which were catalogued as PREMIER, and may now be seen at The National Archioves as PREM 3 and PREM 4.

The work was paid for in respect of the CHARTWELL group by the Trust, and in respect of the CHURCHILL group by Sir Winston: the listing of PREM 3 and PREM 4 was done officially.

This series comprises microfilms of a selection of the CHARTWELL group. The whole Chartwell group of records and papers are now in the custody of Churchill College Cambridge.
