In the mid-19th century the Treasury authorised the preparation and publication by the Public Record Office (PRO) of calendars of state papers, and of documents in foreign archives relating to English history.

- These transcripts were assembled in connection with the Calendar of State Papers, etc, Spanish (24 volumes, 1862 to 1954), those of the reign of Henry VIII also being used in the Calendar of Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, Henry VIII (37 volumes, 1864 to 1932).
