There are also family and personal papers of Margaret MacDonald (feminist, social reformer and wife of Ramsay MacDonald) dating back to the eighteenth century, a few early papers of Malcolm MacDonald (son of Ramsay and Margaret), and some of Sir Frank Markham assembled for a projected biography of Ramsay MacDonald.

James Ramsay MacDonald became leader of the Labour Party in 1922. He served as Prime Minister in 1924 and again between 1929-1931 (in a Labour Government) and 1931-1935 (in a National Government). He then served as Lord President of the Council until his death in 1937.
Margaret Ethel MacDonald (née Gladstone) was married to Ramsay MacDonald from 1896 until her death in 1911.
