Description

Prisoner's name: George Cooper.

Prisoner's age: 32.

Prisoner's occupation: chairmaker.

Court and date of trial: Sussex Quarter Sessions at Horsham 13 July 1830.

Crime: Stealing money from the person of William Julett a silk handkerchief, a tobacco box (value 9d) 2 sovereigns, one half sovereign and eight shillings in silver.

Initial sentence: 7 years' transportation.

Gaoler's report: Character bad; good conduct on the Leviathan.

Annotated: Scrofula - bad character; free pardon 3 March 1835.

Petitioner: George Cooper, the prisoner's brother and 95 people of Horsham; the convict; Robert Henry Hurst; George Cooper, the prisoner's brother.

Grounds for clemency: Prisoner's health bad; has served 5 years on the hulks; bore an honest character; asks for James Worsfold's confession to be taken as he confessed to the crime; no previous crime or indebtedness.

Other papers: A letter from Thomas Coppard forwarding the petition.

Additional Information: On board Leviathan at Portsmouth.
