Description

Prisoner's name: John Read.

Court and date of trial: Kent Summer Assizes 1830.

Crime: Sheep stealing from William Turner.

Initial sentence: Death sentence commuted to transportation for life.

Gaoler's report: Previous character good.

Annotated: To remain in England.

Petitioner: Thomas Read and Elizabeth Read, the prisoner's parents with 30 people as witnesses of Thomas Read's good character.

Grounds for clemency: the prisoner's father is now 65 and has raised a large family; implore that he may be returned to his family.

Other papers: Letter from Henry Winehut.
