from 1993 Economic and Social Research Council
The Social Science Research Council was constituted by royal charter in October 1965. The Science and Technology Act of 1965, which abolished the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, having provided for the constituting of research councils. The newly appointed council was established to encourage and support research in economics, economic history, political science, social anthropology, social psychology and sociology.
The Social Science Research Council appointed nine committees to assist it in awarding research grants. In 1967 various of the committees were authorised by the council to make awards, within agreed limits.
From time to time adjustments were made to the roles of and representation on the committees, and in 1982, the council approved a major reorganisation.
On 1 January 1984 the Social Science Research Council changed its name to the Economic and Social Research Council.
