Administrative / biographical background

Under the terms of the National Assistance Act 1948, appointments to the National Assistance Board were made by the sovereign on the recommendation of the Prime Minister (who was advised in this by the Minister of National Insurance)

The Minister of National Insurance appointed the chairman and one of the two members of each National Assistance appeal tribunal, the other member being appointed by the National Assistance Board from a panel of persons nominated by the minister to represent work people's interests.

The National Assistance Board was abolished in 1966 on the creation of the Ministry of Social Security, and was replaced by the Supplementary Benefits Commission.
