Description

Medical journal of the convict ship Egyptian for 3 August to 16 December 1840 by John Kidd, Surgeon and Superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in carrying prisoners from Dublin to Van Dieman’s Land. (Described at item level).

Folios 2-3 Copy of the sick list for 3 August to 16 December 1840.

Folios 3-5: John Conry, convict, aged 22; case number 1; disease or hurt, affection of liver and deranged state bowels; put on sick list, 12 August 1840, Kingstown, Dublin; discharged 14 September 1840.

Folios 5-6: Patrick Doyle, convict, aged 26; case number 2; disease or hurt, catarrh; put on sick list, 24 August 1840, at sea; discharged 30 August 1840.

Folios 6-7: Michael Foley, convict, aged 19; case number 3; disease or hurt, dysentery; put on sick list, 28 August 1840, at sea; discharged 4 September 1840.

Folios 7-9: Jed Mahoney, convict, aged 32; case number 4; disease or hurt, pleurisy; put on sick list, 15 September 1840, at sea; discharged 24 September 1840.

Folios 9-10: John Fogherty, convict, aged 22; case number 5; disease or hurt, dysentery; put on sick list, 5 October 1840, at sea; discharged 19 October 1840.

Folios 10-11: Michael Leahy, convict, aged 26; case number 6; disease or hurt, loss of voice; put on sick list, 6 November 1840, at sea; discharged 12 November 1840.

Folio 11: Patrick Thomas, convict, aged 22; case number 7; disease or hurt, catarrh; put on sick list, 13 November 1840, at sea; discharged 18 November 1840.

Folio 12: Patrick Brown, convict, aged 26; case number 8; disease or hurt, colic and bowel complaint; put on sick list, 13 December 1840, Hobart Town; discharged 15 December 1840.

Folios 13-24: Blank.

Folio 25: a nosological synopsis of the sick book kept during the period of this journal.

Folios 26-27: Surgeon’s general remarks. The number of prisoners embarked in ship Egyptian for conveyance to Van Dieman’s Land was 170.
