Title
Housebuilding Inquiry: 1980-2005 dataset
Date

1980-2005

Description
This dataset contains information gathered by the Housebuilding Inquiry. Data was gathered by means of the P2 form. The form collected information on housebuilding. Local Authorities completed the return forms. Data about the dwellings was organised by tenure: local authority or new town dwellings; registered Social Landlord dwellings (formerly called Housing association dwellings); private enterprise dwellings. During the period represented by this snapshot of the data, there were four main iterations of the form and data collection. These are described below. 1) P2 monthly data. The P2(Hsg) form was used successfully for 18 years, from 1980 to March 1998. For this period, very detailed data about new houses (eg numbers of bedrooms, special dwellings etc) was collected. 2) For the period April 1998-March 2002, the scope of the survey was drastically reduced. The only detail gathered was starts, completions, houses under construction, and new transfer of dwellings under construction between tenure. The survey was still monthly. 3) For the period April 2002-May 2003, the scope was reduced even further. Only starts and completions were gathered. The survey was still conducted on a monthly basis. 4) Starting in June 2003, the scope of the survey remained the same as (3) above, except that it took place quarterly instead of monthly. The quarterly survey form was still in use at time of transfer. The dataset is an extract from a much larger database held by the Department. In order to create the dataset, which has a very specific date range, content, and data source, the Department created three filter tables to run the query that would generate this extract. The dataset comprises four tables. The main data table was subsequently split into two tables by NDAD. These two tables contain the actual survey data. The two tables between them reflect the change in the level of detail that was gathered by this survey. For 18 years, detailed information about types of housing was gathered monthly, along with figures for starts and completions; this data is contained in the table P2_period1. After March 1998, the level of detail was reduced; and, after June 2003, the frequency of the survey went from monthly to quarterly. All the 'reduced' data is held in the table P2_period2. The remaining three tables contain the filtering data for time periods, form versions and data source.
