Title
Judge Advocate General's Office case index system: 1995-2004 dataset
Date
1995-2004
Description
This dataset contains details of Army and RAF courts martial and Standing Civilian Court (SCC) cases heard between 1995 and 2003. It was transferred as a final state snapshot of the case index system prior to its migration to a revision of the system in Microsoft Access. Much of the data in the 1995-1999 dataset (LCO 60/2) is duplicated here. The dataset also contains one additional table CaseDetails which contains data from 1995 but was not part of the 1995-1999 dataset. The JAG case index system recorded details of the date and type of trial, the name of the Judge Advocate taking the trial, the charges brought and the finding of the court, details of the defendant's service ie unit, rank and service number and (in the case of an SCC hearing) the relationship to service personnel. The system contained data for two types of trial record, Judge Advocate Cases and Register Cases. A Judge Advocate case covers details of court martials that are in progress or where a hearing is awaited. Details of cases requiring further action (for example where appeals are pending) are modified via a"workbook". Where documentation about such cases is awaited data can be input via a"pre-workbook". Following completion of the court martial and confirmation or review of the court's findings the details of the case are transferred to Register Cases. A facility was built into the system allowing reports of Register cases to be generated on paper for transfer to the National Archives. There are three main components to each trial record: 1) Main Details - contains details of the trial dates, the name of the Judge Advocate attending, the venue etc.; 2) Defendant Details - the defendant's name, rank and unit etc.; 3) Charge Details - a note of the charge(s) brought against each defendant, the finding of the court etc. The dataset consists of 24 tables, most of the tables cover the three main areas in which data is recorded in the JAG system: Main details, Charge details and Defendant details. Tables 1-7 contain data from 1991-1993 and contain the data from LCO 60/1 (the"Old Jag" dataset). It is believed that this data was imported into the revised system following modifications in 1995 for test purposes. Tables 8-16 contain court martial data covering 1995-2004 and are linked via the case number and where possible, the defendant number field. Tables 17-24 are lookup tables used to complete fields in the various main data tables, for example those dealing with offences committed and servicemen's ranks.
