Description (What the record is about)
- This dataset comprises data which was input to the Metropolitan Police's Crime Statistics System between April 1993 and March 1994. The records include details of offences, arrests, victims of crime, property stolen and reports classified as"No Crime" (defined as"an allegation where the evidence is insufficient to establish that a crime has been committed"). The format of this dataset is essentially identical to the four preceding ME System datasets. As in these datasets, the data is divided into a Year to Date Extract file (YTDEXTRACT94) containing data relating to offences, arrests, victims and stolen property, and a"No Crime" file (YTDNOCREXT94) containing more limited information about"No Crime" reports. The programs which produced the files were originally written in ICL 2900 COBOL using extensions to the language designed for handling an IDMSX database. This is the last of the ME System datasets to include a"No Crime" file. A small number of offence records appear to have been added after March 1994 (the latest entries in the Offence-Year-Input and Offence-Month-Input fields in the YTDEXTRACT94 table date from September 1994), though peculiarly, these records appear to relate to arrests where an arrest record was input before April 1994. In some cases the entry in the Offence-Year-Input field predates April 1993 if the record relates to an arrest which was input between April 1993 and March 1994. Equally, many records relate to offences, arrests or"no crimes" which were originally reported at a much earlier period than the date when the record was input: e.g. the earliest offences recorded in the Offence-Date-YY field in YTDEXTRACT94 appear to date from 1980 (these relate to arrests which were input in 1993-1994). This dataset consists of two tables: YTDNOCREXT94 (containing data relating to allegations classed as"No Crime"), and YTDEXTRACT94 (containing all other data input to the database, i.e. details of offences, arrests, victims and stolen property).
