Shortly after its establishment the Forestry Commission, faced with a lack of technical information on many aspects of forestry in Britain, established a small research branch in London, under the control of a chief research officer. It dealt with such questions as silviculture, the rate of tree growth and timber production, entomology, and mycology.

In 1946, a central forest research station was established at Alice Holt Lodge, as a result of the commission's recommendations on post-war forest policy.
